Bitterroot River near Victor, Montana

National trout heat + closure tracker

What should I check before fishing?

Check the controlling state or land-manager restriction first.

Then read agency advice. Use BlueStreamFly heat and flow context only after the official source, affected reach, and effective time are clear.

Read in this order

Law, advice, then fishing context.

Five labels make the source’s authority and uncertainty explicit. They are not interchangeable, and a fishing score cannot override any of them.

  1. 01

    Official restriction

Stop and read the controlling order.

Legal closures, seasonal closures, time limits, and access restrictions control the decision for the stated water, reach, and effective period.

  2. 02

    Agency advisory

    Follow the agency’s conservation guidance.

A voluntary advisory is official guidance, but it is not presented as a legal closure unless the source says that it is.

  3. 03

    BSF caution

Use it as planning context, not law.

BlueStreamFly may flag heat or low-flow concern from reviewed observations. That editorial caution cannot replace an agency order.

  4. 04

    Verify

Check the official page before deciding.

The right source is known, but its check may be stale, unavailable, conflicting, or unsafe to summarize automatically.

  5. 05

    Unknown

Do not infer legal or fishing status.

The tracker cannot establish a defensible answer from its reviewed record. Unknown never means unrestricted or safe.

National source desk

Check the notice, reach, and exact source.

Current reviewed notices and the 38-state source directory are already on the page. Load the frozen file only for filters and the archive—never as a per-river database query.

Current notices · scheduled notices · verify queue · archive

Load filters and the archive.

Current approved summaries and the official source directory are already available. Load the full frozen release to search, filter, or inspect its archive; private pins, exact spots, and angler data are excluded.

Current reviewed release

28 notices with a current or verify status

These approved summaries are indexable with their direct official sources. Expired checks automatically move to Verify; silence never means open.

Methodology

A source registry, not a legal shortcut.

BlueStreamFly Editorial Team reviews the correct state authority, preserves the direct source, and publishes only moderated notices with a documented scope.

  1. 01

    Identify the authority.

Each supported state receives its own fish-and-wildlife or controlling status source. One state is never allowed to fall back to another state’s page.

  2. 02

Classify only what the source supports.

Legal restrictions, voluntary advisories, official status pages, and BSF cautions remain distinct. Ambiguity becomes Verify or Unknown.

  3. 03

    Bind time and place.

A notice carries state, generalized reach when available, checked time, effective time, official expiry, and a review deadline in UTC.

  4. 04

    Moderate, expire, and archive.

Only approved public records are displayed. Expired notices leave the current queue but remain in the archive with their historical limitations.

Use it honestly

What this release cannot establish.

Not every U.S. trout water

The directory covers the 38 states supported by BlueStreamFly reports. A state source record does not prove that every local, tribal, federal, or private-water notice has been captured.

No inference from silence

An empty result can mean no publishable notice matched this frozen release. It cannot establish that the water is unrestricted, accessible, or safe.

Context is not a restriction

Weather forecasts are not measured rainfall. Provisional flow or temperature observations may be revised and never create a legal status on their own.

Reach boundaries matter

A state- or river-level record must not be stretched to an unlisted reach. Read the official source’s geography and effective period before acting.

Citation + downloads

Audit the same frozen release.

The JSON and CSV carry the reviewed public record. Field definitions, provenance, rights, reuse terms, and derivations are documented beside the files.

Use current conditions to plan the rest of the day.

River reports keep fishability, weather, flow, hatches, access, and official rules in separate evidence lanes so one signal does not masquerade as the whole answer.
